According to reports, the 2025 Champions Trophy, initially designated to be hosted by Pakistan by the ICC, is anticipated to adopt a hybrid model akin to the Asia Cup.
The upcoming Champions Trophy, initially assigned to Pakistan, is reportedly slated for a hybrid format resembling the Asia Cup. Reports suggest Indian matches could be held in the UAE due to uncertainties regarding the Indian Government’s stance. Set to be the ninth edition, the ICC tournament for the top eight ODI teams is scheduled from February to March 2025.
However, scheduling alterations are possible due to potential conflicts with significant cricketing events like the Indian Premier League (IPL). The decision on hosting remains pending, subject to final agreements and adjustments considering conflicting schedules.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has pressed the International Cricket Council (ICC) to finalize the hosting rights agreement for the Champions Trophy 2025. Emphasizing the need for compensation in case India declines to tour Pakistan due to political or security concerns, PCB officials met with the ICC executive board. Although Pakistan is designated as the host, the ICC has yet to formalize the hosting agreement.
Concerns were raised regarding the possibility of India’s refusal to visit Pakistan, urging the ICC to avoid unilateral decisions and navigate any potential issues regarding team participation diplomatically and fairly, as per sources familiar with the discussions held in Ahmedabad.PCB officials further urged the ICC to designate an independent security agency to collaborate with Pakistan’s government and security authorities if India declines to play in Pakistan due to security concerns.
