Ajinkya Rahane’s future in Test cricket appears uncertain, with reports indicating his probable exclusion from the upcoming South Africa series.
India is set to tour South Africa for a comprehensive series starting with three T20Is in Durban on December 10 and concluding in Johannesburg on December 14. This will be followed by a 3-match ODI series from December 17 to 19. Transitioning to red-ball cricket, a crucial two-match test series begins on December 26, with the second test scheduled in Cape Town from January 3 to 7.
This series holds significance in the ICC World Test Championship standings, offering India an opportunity to strengthen their position if victorious.
Amidst the pending BCCI squad announcement, a report hints at Ajinkya Rahane’s possible exclusion from the South Africa test series, favoring KL Rahul as the backup wicketkeeper.
An insider disclosed to the Times of India about selectors’ focus on nurturing players for long-term alliances, aligning with Shreyas Iyer’s return and Shubman Gill’s No. 3 position, potentially limiting Rahane’s opportunity. Rahane’s recent performances working against him highlight selectors exploring fresh options.
“The selection committee is very clear that it wants to groom players who will play together for a longer period of time. With Shreyas Iyer coming back into Test reckoning and Shubman Gill batting at No. 3, there is little scope for Rahane. KL Rahul too could be considered for the Test matches as he could be a backup wicketkeeping option,” the source said.
