Reports from PTI suggest that India’s skipper Rohit Sharma is improbable to feature in T20Is in the foreseeable future despite leading the team to the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Rohit Sharma, the ODI and Test captain of India, seems unlikely to continue playing T20 Internationals in the near future, a decision reportedly made before the commencement of the 50-over World Cup, as indicated by BCCI insiders. Notably, Rohit hasn’t participated in any T20 matches since India’s exit from the T20 World Cup in November 2022.
Sources suggest that discussions between Rohit and selectors, especially Ajit Agarkar, led to his choice to abstain from T20Is, aligning his focus with ODI cricket. This self-imposed hiatus from T20Is, driven by Rohit’s decision, remains consistent with his prior commitment towards the ODI World Cup, according to a senior BCCI source speaking anonymously to PTI.
”It is not a new development. Rohit hasn’t played any T20Is in the past year as the focus was on the ODI World Cup. He had extensive discussions with the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in this regard. He has himself volunteered to stay away from T20Is. It has completely been Rohit’s call,” the source stated.
India has four strong openers—Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad—all established in the IPL. Should the younger lot underperform, selectors or the BCCI might urge Rohit to reconsider his stance.
Rohit, in this stage of his career, aims to manage his workload and prevent injuries, particularly with an upcoming schedule of seven Tests from December 2023 to March 2024. His primary focus shifts towards red-ball cricket, but might still lead India into the 2025 World Test Championship final.
