BCCI is reportedly aiming to persuade Rohit Sharma to captain India in the upcoming South Africa T20I series, with squad announcements expected for the multi-format tour on November 30.

The BCCI is set to unveil India’s squads for the forthcoming South Africa tour, encompassing various formats, on November 30. Reports from PTI suggest BCCI’s intent to persuade Rohit Sharma to captain the team in the three T20Is, despite his absence from this format since the 2022 T20 World Cup. Initially presumed unavailable for the white-ball leg, Rohit’s reconsideration is a notable development.

Reportedly, Jay Shah, BCCI’s secretary, is set to meet with selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar in Delhi to deliberate on squad selections and strategize for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

The tour includes three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests in South Africa. However, with Hardik Pandya recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the recent ODI World Cup, he won’t regain fitness in time for the Proteas series.

Suryakumar Yadav, presently leading the Indian team in the ongoing T20I series against Australia, might assume captaincy if Rohit declines leadership for the T20I series in South Africa.

The challenge lies in managing player workload due to the compact schedule, with India set to play six white-ball matches in just 11 days, followed by the Test series within five days. Considering the workload priorities, the BCCI focuses more on formats leading up to upcoming global tournaments. If Rohit Sharma leads the T20Is, there’s a likelihood he might rest strategically to rejuvenate for the Test matches, a decision to be guided by the sports science team.
