India is reportedly considering the inclusion of either Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad as a potential replacement for Shubman Gill, who is down with dengue fever, in the ODI World Cup 2023 Squad.
Indian opener Shubman Gill, currently sidelined by dengue fever, sat out India’s opening ODI World Cup 2023 match against Australia on October 8 and was subsequently ruled out for the second match versus Afghanistan on October 9. While India gears up to face Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on October 11, it has been reported that Gill may also miss the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash on October 14 in Ahmedabad, though the BCCI has yet to confirm this.
Given Gill’s expected short absence, reports suggest that the team management is contemplating the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal or Ruturaj Gaikwad as potential replacements.
As per a report in the Indian Express dated October 10, the BCCI selection committee, headed by former pace bowler Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to convene during the India-Afghanistan match in Delhi, where they will make a decision regarding Shubman Gill’s further participation in the tournament. The report suggests that Gill’s recovery is expected to take over a week, prompting selectors to discuss the potential inclusion of a replacement player in consultation with the team management.
In the event of a formal request, left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal or the captain of the Asian Games 2023 gold medal-winning Indian team, Ruturaj Gaikwad, are candidates to join the squad as stand-ins.
After being released from a Chennai hospital following an overnight stay for observation, Gill has received medical advice for 48 hours of rest. His health status will be reevaluated on Thursday. Typically, dengue recovery, along with fatigue, requires at least three weeks.
