Ricky Ponting, former Australian captain, praised David Warner’s winning mentality and tipped young batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk as his potential replacement.
Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting Shared a heartfelt opinion for David Warner, who is set to retire after the ongoing T20 World Cup. Ponting hailed Warner as a “natural winner” whose presence will be missed beyond his batting contributions.
Warner, 37, has already announced his retirement from ODI and Test cricket. He will culminate his international career after the T20 World Cup. “He’s a crucial team player, especially in high-pressure tournaments like World Cups. His winning mentality is infectious, and his on-field attitude reflects his desire to succeed,” Ponting said on ESPNcricinfo.
“We’ll miss more than just his runs when he’s gone. Hopefully, Australian cricket has the depth to find a suitable replacement,” Ponting added.
Warner’s recent stint with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL was hampered by injuries. However, Ponting, who coached the team, saw promise in young batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk. Fraser-McGurk even impressed the selectors and was named as a travelling reserve for the T20 World Cup squad.
“It’ll be a challenging role to fill, but Australia has a strong pool of talent. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fraser-McGurk takes over the top-order position after David’s retirement. He’s a very talented player, and I had the privilege of coaching him at Delhi Capitals this year,” Ponting said about finding Warner’s replacement.
An Australian victory in the T20 World Cup would see them hold all three major cricket trophies simultaneously. If that happens, Warner could be part of an elite group of four players – alongside Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Travis Head – to have featured in all three finals.
