Rishabh Pant is set to be named Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) new captain for IPL 2025 after being acquired for INR 27 crore in the 2024 mega auction.

Rishabh Pant, the most expensive player in IPL history, is set to lead Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2025 season after being purchased for a record INR 27 crore (approximately USD 3.21 million) at the November 2024 mega auction. Pant’s acquisition followed an intense bidding war with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Pant’s appointment marks a significant leadership shift for LSG, who were previously led by KL Rahul. Rahul captained the team for their first three seasons, guiding them to playoffs in their first two campaigns but failing to secure a finals berth. However, LSG had a poor outing in IPL 2024, finishing seventh on the points table. With Rahul’s departure, LSG prioritized securing an Indian captain, with Pant ultimately chosen over other contenders, including Shreyas Iyer.

Pant began his IPL captaincy journey in 2021 with Delhi Capitals (DC), a team he represented since 2016. Despite his leadership tenure, discussions regarding his future as DC’s skipper remained inconclusive. Choosing to re-enter the auction, Pant was picked up by LSG. His return to the field in IPL 2025 is noteworthy, given he missed the 2023 season due to a near-fatal car accident.

Pant’s presence strengthens LSG’s squad, which includes overseas stars like David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram, alongside Indian pacers such as Akash Deep and Avesh Khan. While players like Nicholas Pooran, Marsh, and Miller were considered for captaincy, LSG ultimately settled on Pant for the role.

Working with LSG head coach Justin Langer and mentor Zaheer Khan, Pant aims to lead the franchise to a successful season. His rapport with Langer, developed during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, could prove vital in shaping LSG’s campaign.
