Rishabh Pant, the star Indian wicketkeeper-batter, is set to stage a remarkable comeback to competitive cricket after nearly 15 months, potentially taking on the role of captain for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2024 season. Recovering remarkably from a severe car accident in December 2022, Pant has displayed impressive progress, as reported by Cricbuzz.
Reports indicate that Pant’s mobility has significantly improved, evident from his participation and performance in a practice match held in Alur. However, it’s revealed that Pant will primarily contribute as a pure batter for DC, with another specialist wicketkeeper option likely to feature in their XI.
Although Pant is presently undergoing training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), DC authorities remain optimistic about securing his clearance for IPL 2024 participation.
Recently, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting also expressed his anticipation for Pant’s potential return for the entire IPL 2024 season, highlighting the batter’s confidence in his readiness to play. He emphasized Pant’s dynamic skills and leadership as the team’s captain, noting the significant impact of Pant’s absence in the previous IPL season where DC finished ninth with just five wins.
Ponting also mentioned that if Pant is unavailable, David Warner would lead the team. Despite Pant’s upbeat demeanor, the coach further acknowledged the need to remain cautious while eagerly awaiting Pant’s return.
