Adam Gilchrist criticized Rishabh Pant’s lengthy argument with an umpire during the LSG vs DC match, suggesting that umpires should take better control of such situations.
In the IPL match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals on April 12th, Rishabh Pant engaged in a discussion with the umpire after a delivery from Ishant Sharma was called wide. Pant signaled for a review, suggesting potential contact with the ball by the batter, Devdutt Padikkal.
However, the TV umpire found no evidence of contact and upheld the wide decision. Despite this, Pant questioned why the ‘Snickometer,’ a tool for detecting faint edges, wasn’t utilized. Commentators initially thought Pant was disputing his decision to review, but it turned out he was concerned about the technology not being used.
Legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, speaking on Cricbuzz, emphasized the need for umpires to assert control during such moments in matches. Gilchrist urged umpires to swiftly conclude such discussions, proposing fines for players who persist in arguing despite clarification.
“I saw another example tonight where umpires need to take better control of games, and that is in any format. They just got to do a better job at moving things forward. There was a dispute over whether Rishabh had reviewed it. Okay, there was a miscommunication over the review call. But they stood there and spoke about that for 3-4 minutes. It’s a very simple conversation, I believe,” Gilchrist said.
“No matter how much Rishabh is complaining or any other player is complaining, umpires should just say, ‘it’s over’ and quickly move on. But if he keeps talking, he should get fined,” he added.
Later, Pant’s batting shined through as he scored a rapid 41 off just 24 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes, guiding Delhi to a successful chase of 168 runs with 11 balls remaining. This win marked Delhi’s second in the IPL 2024 season.
