Robin Uthappa praised Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and nature as a blend of Dhoni’s influence and his style.

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa recently shared his insights on Rohit Sharma’s leadership as Mumbai Indians captain on an episode of the Legends Lounge show called ‘Captain Rohit’s Legacy.’ The program featured legends like Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, and Eoin Morgan, who explored Sharma’s captaincy journey.

Uthappa highlighted a key aspect of Sharma’s leadership- his ability to learn from former Indian captain MS Dhoni while maintaining his unique style. Uthappa explained that Sharma has incorporated valuable aspects of Dhoni’s captaincy but has not simply copied him.

“He has picked up a lot of nuances from MS (Dhoni) and made it his own. Nonchalance is a way of life for him, but he’s not afraid to show his emotions on the field. It’s unique to Rohit,” Uthappa said in the episode that aired on JioCinema.

Eoin Morgan, the former England captain, also commended Sharma’s ability to manage the flow of a game and his talent for creating a balanced team environment. “His authentic passion separates him from others. He has made analysis a cornerstone for the team he is leading. He has always found the right balance in the team, whether he is in or out of form,” said the left-handed batter.

Zaheer Khan also joined the conversation, echoing Uthappa’s sentiments, describing Sharma as a leader who manages to be both ‘intense’ and ‘casual’. “Being casual makes him approachable. But he is very intense when he is going about his business and preparing. That works in his favour brilliantly. He has a very good tactical understanding of the game,” said Zaheer.

The discussion comes amid the recent announcement that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will succeed Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season. After five IPL titles, the team will now seek their sixth title under Hardik Pandya, with their first match against the Gujarat Titans on March 24th.
