Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to skip the home series against England to manage their workload after the Australia tour.

India’s key players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to skip the upcoming white-ball series against England. This decision, aimed at managing their workload, comes after the taxing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. While reports from Sports Tak suggest the move is almost certain, a final decision will follow discussions with the players.

Rohit and Kohli, having retired from T20Is, will not feature in the shortest format, while Bumrah is expected to miss both wings of the tournament. Notably, despite recent breaks for personal and fitness reasons, the trio has been active in the last six months, participating in almost all major assignments.

Bumrah has been handling a heavy workload during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. In the four Tests, he has bowled a total of 141.2 overs, the highest among all bowlers in the series. His 53.2 overs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the fourth Test mark his most in a red-ball international match. Skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged the need to manage Bumrah’s workload carefully.

“To be honest, he has bowled a lot of overs. There is no doubt about it. But again, every Test match we play, we keep that in mind. You know, the workloads of all the bowlers in fact. But again, if somebody is in such a great form, you want to try and maximise that form how much ever you can. And that is what we’ve been trying to do with Bumrah,” Rohit said.

“But there comes a time where you need to step back a little bit and give him that little bit of extra breather as well. So, we’ve been very careful. I’ve been very careful. I talk to him about how he feels and stuff like that. So, yeah. Those things should be managed carefully. And I’m trying to do that on the field,” he added.

The India-England series begins with five T20Is on January 22, just 15 days after the Sydney Test. The ODIs will start on February 6, marking India’s last bilateral series before the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE.
