Rohit Sharma Agrees to Continue as Captain
In a recent review meeting, Rohit Sharma confirmed he would stay on as India’s captain until a successor is chosen.
BCCI officials, along with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir, convened in Mumbai on Saturday for a crucial review meeting. The meeting was held in the aftermath of India’s disappointing performance in the Test format, where they lost six of their last eight Tests, including a home whitewash. One of the key matters discussed during this meeting was the future of India’s captaincy in both the Test and ODI formats.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Rohit Sharma assured the BCCI that he would continue to captain the team for the next few months. “I will remain the skipper for the next few months until the board chooses the future captain,” Rohit reportedly told the officials. He also added that whoever is selected as his successor would have his “full support.”
It was also decided that Rohit would retain the ODI captaincy for the time being, with a decision on his successor to be made after the ICC Champions Trophy. Earlier, in July last year, Suryakumar Yadav had been appointed as the new T20I captain after Rohit’s retirement from the format following the T20 World Cup.
Jasprit Bumrah Considered for Test Captaincy
In the meeting, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s name was discussed as a potential candidate for the Test captaincy. Bumrah, who led India to their only Test victory since October in Perth, was also in charge for the Sydney Test, where India lost to Australia.

However, concerns were raised regarding his ability to lead in a five-match series, given his ongoing workload management issues. The BCCI decided to hold off on further discussions about Bumrah’s future as captain for the time being.
