Gilchrist’s Take on Rohit Sharma’s Future
Adam Gilchrist predicted Rohit Sharma’s possible exit from Test cricket and hinted at his final ODI appearance in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has hinted that Rohit Sharma may have played his final Test match for India. Rohit endured a dismal tour of Australia, scoring just 31 runs in five innings at a meagre average of 6.20. The Indian captain dropped himself from the playing XI for the fifth Test in Sydney, giving Shubman Gill an opportunity to play. India eventually lost the five-match series 1-3, relinquishing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after holding it for a decade.
Rohit featured in the fourth Test but managed scores of only 3 and 9. India’s next Test series is scheduled in England in June, but Gilchrist believes the Nagpur-born cricketer may not push for a spot in the squad.
Speaking on the “Club Prairie Fire” podcast, Gilchrist said Rohit might reassess his priorities, especially after recently becoming a father for the second time. “I don’t see Rohit going to England. I just felt that he says he will assess it when he gets home. I mean, the first thing he will be met with when he gets home is a two-month-old baby that he has to change the nappies on. Now that might incentivise him to go to England. But I don’t see him pressing on,” Gilchrist remarked.
ODI Future Hinges on Champions Trophy
While discussing Rohit’s Test career, Gilchrist also commented on his ODI prospects. The former wicketkeeper-batter suggested that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 might be Rohit’s final stint in the 50-over format.

“I think he’ll probably have a crack at the Champions Trophy and that might be…that might see him out,” Gilchrist remarked.
Despite his modest Test numbers, Rohit continues to excel in ODIs. Since 2023, the right-handed batter has accumulated 1,412 runs in 29 innings at an impressive average of 52.29 and a strike rate of 119.35. His ODI future, Gilchrist believes, could hinge on his performance in the Champions Trophy.
