Ambati Rayudu backs Rohit Sharma’s leadership for 2027 WC
Ambati Rayudu backed Rohit Sharma’s leadership, saying the India skipper must continue as ODI captain for the 2027 World Cup.
Former India middle-order batter Ambati Rayudu heaped praise on Rohit Sharma, saying the ODI captain’s batting, leadership and ability to instill confidence in players make him irreplaceable in the 50-over format.
Rayudu, who represented India in 55 ODIs and six T20Is between 2013 and 2019 before retiring from international cricket to take up a pundit’s role, strongly believes Rohit must lead India in the 2027 World Cup.
“You need to look at who can win you the World Cup. If Rohit’s captaincy can do that, then he should continue till 2027. There is no one who can replace Rohit in ODIs; his captaincy, his batting & the confidence he gives to players are all extremely important – Rohit must be the captain in the 2027 World Cup,” Rayudu said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel.
The 2027 edition of the men’s ODI World Cup will be played in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe during October-November, with 14 teams competing for the title.

Under Rohit’s leadership, India finished runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup. The Men in Blue won all nine league games and the semifinal against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on November 15, 2023. However, they lost the final by six wickets to Pat Cummins-led Australia.
Rohit played a pivotal role with the bat, scoring 597 runs at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.94, finishing as the second-highest run-getter of the tournament.
In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rohit was in sublime form, smashing five centuries and a fifty to accumulate 648 runs, although India failed to reach the final under Virat Kohli’s captaincy. Even in the 2015 edition, Rohit impressed with his batting but India’s campaign ended in the semifinal.
