With the T20 World Cup 2024 looming just two months away, all eyes are on India’s squad selection and captaincy for the tournament. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah recently put an end to the speculations by expressing his confidence in Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
Speaking at the renaming ceremony of the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, Shah lauded India’s performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, emphasizing their 10-match winning streak despite falling short in the final. He asserted his belief that India, under Rohit’s captaincy, will triumph in the T20 World Cup 2024.
“People were waiting for me to speak about the ODI World Cup 2023. We may have lost the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. But we won hearts there by winning 10 matches in a row. I am confident that India will win the 2024 T20I World Cup under Rohit Sharma,” said Jay Shah during the naming ceremony of Niranjan Shah stadium in Rajkot.
Following India’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were notably absent from the T20I squad. However, their hiatus ended with the T20I series against Afghanistan, where they made their comeback.
Rohit’s return was marked by initial struggles, facing consecutive ducks in the first two matches, but he bounced back spectacularly in the final game, scoring an unbeaten 121 runs. Kohli, on the other hand, missed the first match due to personal reasons and contributed with a quick cameo in the second T20I before facing a golden duck in the final match.
As the duo looks set for the T20 World Cup 2024, the competition among the younger players intensifies as they vie for spots in the squad for the upcoming mega event in the West Indies and USA.
