Rohit Sharma, reflecting on his cricket career, expressed his burning desire to secure a World Cup victory with Team India before his retirement.

Indian team skipper Rohit Sharma still carries the sting of India’s World Cup defeat, yearning for a victory before he hangs up his jersey. Despite the disappointment of missing out on the trophy last year, he remains resolute in his ambition, eyeing a chance to fulfill his dream before retiring, possibly extending his career until 2027.

During a candid conversation with British pop sensation Ed Sheeran on Breakfast With Champions, Rohit’s passion shined through as he expressed his determination to bring home the coveted World Cup title for India.

“I’m still playing well at this point in time, so I’m thinking I’m going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know, until India,” Rohit abruptly halted.

Ed Sheeran called to finish Rohit’s sentence, asking, “Win the World Cup?”

Sharma eagerly responded, “Yeah, I really want to win that. I really want to win that World Cup.”

Reflecting on the 2023 final, Rohit recalled the team’s confidence while facing Australia. Despite high hopes and meticulous preparation, a disappointing performance shattered their dreams. While the skipper acknowledged the opponent’s brilliance, he believes India didn’t fail drastically. It was simply a case of one bad day.

“50 over World Cup for me is the actual World Cup. We’ve grown up watching that 50 over World Cup. More importantly, it was happening in India in front of our home crowd and we played so well up until that final. I thought when we, when we won the semi-finals, I thought, okay, now, you know, we are just one step away from it. We are doing all the things right,” said Rohit.

“What is that one thing that can make us lose this World Cup? And honestly, not a single thing came to my mind because I thought we ticked all the boxes. We were playing good cricket. Confidence was there. You’re all supposed to have one bad day and I guess that was one bad day,” he added.

Addressing retirement rumors, Rohit dismissed them, citing his current form meeting his standards. He also expressed aspirations for winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and leading India to the World Test Championship final in 2025.

“I haven’t really thought about retirement. But, I don’t know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time – so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully, India makes it,” Rohit concluded.
