Rohit Sharma praised Jasprit Bumrah’s performance, noting his continuous improvement and genius, but chose not to elaborate to keep Bumrah focused and in the same mindset for the World Cup.
The Indian cricket team secured a comeback victory against Pakistan in a thrilling, low-scoring T20 World Cup 2024 group-stage match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Jasprit Bumrah showcased his exceptional skills, leading India to an impressive comeback.
In the post-match presentation, skipper Rohit Sharma expressed disappointment with the batting performance, highlighting the lack of significant partnerships. Despite Rishabh Pant’s top score of 42 off 31 balls, India could only set a target of 120 runs. Rohit also emphasized the team’s determination to fight for every run in the second innings, which proved crucial on a pitch that offered enough assistance to the bowlers.
“We didn’t bat well enough. Halfway through our innings, we were in a good position. We didn’t put enough partnership there and fell short with the bat,” the skipper said.
“We spoke about every run matters on a pitch like that. There was enough in the pitch. Was a good wicket to be honest, compared to the last game,” he added.
Furthermore, Rohit Sharma expressed confidence in his bowling lineup’s ability to turn the game around, revealing that the team’s strategy was to mirror the damage done by their opponents. While praising the bowlers, Rohit deliberately avoided focusing too much on Jasprit Bumrah, preferring to keep him in the same strong mindset for future matches.
“With a bowling lineup like that, you feel confident to do the job. Halfway through the stage when they were batting, we got everyone together and said that if it can happen to us, it can happen to them,” he said.
“A little contribution from everyone can make a huge difference. He’s going from strength to strength (Bumrah). We all know what he can do. Not going to talk too much about him. Want him to be in that mindset throughout the WC. He’s a genius, we all know that,” Rohit added.

Rohit also commended the crowd’s unwavering support, acknowledging their role in boosting the team’s morale.
“The crowd was superb. They never disappoint wherever we play. I’m sure they’ll be going home with a big smile. It’s just the start, we have a long way to go,” the skipper concluded.
