Sourav Ganguly opined that Rohit Sharma, with his remarkable leadership in winning 10 matches during the 50-over World Cup, remains the optimal selection as India’s T20 World Cup captain.
In a recent announcement, BCCI secretary Jay Shah disclosed that Rohit Sharma will lead India in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled for June. Shah justified the decision by citing Hardik Pandya’s injury, which limited the available captaincy options, and highlighted Rohit’s successful stint as captain during the ODI World Cup last year. Additionally, Rohit’s impressive performance, including a remarkable century in a T20I against Afghanistan last month, further solidified his candidacy.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly echoed Shah’s sentiment, affirming Rohit as the prime choice for captaincy. With a stellar record of leading India to victory in 42 out of 54 T20Is under his helm, Rohit’s leadership skills remain indisputable.
“Rohit Sharma is the right choice as India captain for the T20 World Cup. The way he led the Indian team and won 10 matches in the 50-over World Cup is still fresh in our memory. So, Rohit was the best choice,” Ganguly told Mid-Day.
The upcoming T20 World Cup, is set to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Spekaing at an event, Shah expressed confidence in India’s potential win under the captaincy of Rohit. He reflected on India’s commendable performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they won hearts with 10 consecutive victories despite falling short in the final.
Shah also lauded Rohit’s resilience, citing his instrumental innings in the face of adversity during the Afghanistan series. With Rohit’s proven ability and India’s competitive spirit, Shah remains optimistic about their chances in the upcoming tournament.
