Recent reports suggest that Rohit Sharma might retire from T20 Internationals after the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Recent reports suggest that the Indian T20I setup might undergo a significant shift, with captain Rohit Sharma potentially bidding adieu to T20 Internationals after the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. This speculated retirement is connected with the controversial decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as vice-captain of India’s T20 World Cup squad.
Rohit has been a cornerstone of India’s limited-overs teams for over a decade, leading the squad to numerous wins, including triumphs in the 2018 and 2024 Asia Cup. However, concerns have arisen over his recent form, particularly during this year’s IPL.
After a positive return to T20Is against Afghanistan, Rohit’s batting initially faltered but roared back with a century in the third match. In IPL 2024, he showcased brilliance early on, including a century, but his recent form waned with consecutive low scores.
According to reports from Dainik Jagran, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eyeing Hardik Pandya as a prospective leader for the team. This has prompted Pandya’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad and his appointment as vice-captain, despite his recent struggles on the field in IPL.

Conversely, Hardik Pandya too has been struggling in the IPL, managing only 200 runs and 11 wickets, falling short of his usual standards.
The reports also indicated that despite skipper Rohit and chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s reservations about Pandya’s selection for the T20 World Cup 2024 due to his poor form, they yielded to pressure from BCCI’s higher-ups. The BCCI sees Pandya as a potential future captain, prompting his inclusion despite concerns over his recent performances.
Given Hardik’s struggles, India’s decision to entrust him with T20I leadership appears uncertain and risky, raising questions about this choice.
