At Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday, October 14, India convincingly defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets with over 19 overs to spare in the World Cup match.
In the first innings, India engineered a remarkable resurgence in the middle overs, restricting Pakistan to a total of 191. Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja played instrumental roles, each claiming two wickets, which caused Pakistan to lose eight wickets for just 39 runs, despite Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s earlier partnership showing promise.
Pakistan’s downfall began when Siraj dismissed the Pakistani captain, breaking their 82-run partnership, followed by Kuldeep’s LBW dismissal of Saud Shakeel and the leg-stump bowled Iftikhar Ahmed. Bumrah added to Pakistan’s woes with a brilliant delivery to dismiss Rizwan and also removing Shadab Khan in the following over. Pakistan’s batting crumbled, eventually leading to their dismissal for 191.
In their chase after Pakistan’s collapse at 191, India’s captain Rohit Sharma continued his impressive form, scoring 86 runs and setting the stage with a rapid 56-run partnership alongside Virat Kohli in just 42 balls. Shubman Gill, returning from dengue, made a promising start with 16 runs off 11 balls before being dismissed by Shaheen Afridi. Kohli, also appearing in fine form, fell to Hasan Ali, leaving Shreyas Iyer and Rohit in the middle. Shreyas Iyer sealed the win while also achieving his half-century in the process.
