Rohit Sharma
Ravichandran Ashwin addressed rumors about Rohit Sharma’s future with Mumbai Indians, suggesting that Sharma might be content to stay with the team despite a possible captaincy change.

Speculations about Rohit Sharma’s future with the Mumbai Indians (MI) have been all over the cricket community now, with multiple reports circulating on social media. Following MI’s decision to hand over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya last season, rumours suggest that the atmosphere in the dressing room has not been ideal. As a result, there is talk that Rohit Sharma might consider leaving the franchise before the upcoming mega auction.

Contrary to these rumours, Ravichandran Ashwin shared a different perspective in his recent YouTube video, suggesting that Rohit may still wish to stay with MI. Ashwin believes that for some players, money becomes less important after a certain point, and Rohit could be content to continue playing for the five-time champions.

“In fact, even if you think like Rohit, it’s not wrong at all. I don’t want any headaches. I have been a captain for India. I have captained for Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it’s super. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of those players. That’s the thing,” remarked Ashwin.

While Rohit has yet to clarify his stance, there are indications he may not be entirely satisfied with how the captaincy transition was handled. The sudden introduction of Hardik Pandya into the leadership role was perceived as abrupt and hastily executed.

Player retention and releases present challenges for every IPL team, but Mumbai Indians may face particular difficulties in keeping all their star players content. The presence of Hardik Pandya further complicates matters, as MI already boasts several top-tier players.

Assuming Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are the first two retentions, convincing both Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma to stay on as the third and fourth retentions ahead of the IPL 2025 auction could be challenging. Both players understand their market value and know they could secure higher bids in the auction. If a trade occurs, Suryakumar and Rohit would likely be among the most in-demand players.
