Abhishek Nayar believes that if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli can survive the first 25–30 balls, they’ll regain their form in the ongoing BGT series.
India’s seasoned players, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are yet to showcase their best in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Despite India being competitive after three matches in Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane, the duo has struggled for consistency. Kohli, who hit a century in the series opener, has only managed 26 runs in his last four innings. Rohit, returning after missing the first Test, has had an underwhelming impact so far.
Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar expressed optimism about their return to form, stating that a solid start at the crease could help them regain their rhythm. He highlighted the importance of focus and refining game plans during discussions with experienced players like Rohit and Kohli.
“I always believe it’s about having that confidence and getting off to a good start. If they get that, their game looks different. I believe both Rohit and Virat are the kind of players that if they face 25–30 deliveries, you’ll see them back in their usual form,” stated Nayar at the press conference after Stumps on Day 1.
“As Rohit said, generally when you’re having a discussion with an experienced player, it’s around their focus and game plan. Every player has their weakness. They will get dismissed one way or another. The thought is behind making sure what kind of zone they need to make those runs,” he added.
Abhishek Nayar then reflected positively on the team’s performance on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test. Despite batting-friendly conditions, Nayar praised the team’s resilience and ability to adapt after a strong start from Australia. Debutant Sam Konstas impressed with a quick-fire innings, but India managed to regain control after lunch by applying consistent pressure.
“It wasn’t the easiest conditions to bowl, we felt. They were good to bat on. At times like that, it’s important to stick to your guns. I felt we came back really strong post-Lunch. Bowling those maidens, putting the pressure. At times like that, you are taken by surprise when someone plays a knock like that. But, I felt we responded really well and through the day, kept at it, and reaped the rewards towards the end. Overall, you look at the day, we were happy with where we ended,” said the coach.
India will be hoping their senior batters step up in the remaining matches as they aim to secure the series.
