Despite their T20 World Cup exit, West Indies skipper Rovman Powell remained optimistic about the future of West Indies cricket and praised his team’s fight against South Africa.
The West Indies’ hopes for the T20 World Cup may have been dashed, but skipper Rovman Powell sees it as the beginning of a resurgence in Caribbean cricket. After being sent in to bat first, the West Indies struggled initially, finding themselves at 5/2. Roston Chase’s crucial 52 runs helped them reach a modest total of 135.
Due to consistent rain during South Africa’s chase, a revised target of 123 from 17 overs was set. The West Indies fought hard, pushing South Africa to the brink with strong bowling, but Marco Jansen’s efforts led the Proteas to a 3-wicket victory in the final over.
Powell acknowledged the commendable fight from his team, emphasizing the positive strides made in West Indies cricket.
“Credit to the boys for fighting till the end. As a batting group, this is a performance we want to forget, we didn’t bat well in the middle overs. We lost wickets in clusters and that always breaks the back of the batting team. It was a commendable effort,” stated the skipper in a post-match interview.
“We haven’t won the World Cup or reached the semifinal but we have played some good cricket in the last 12 months. There is a buzz among the supporters about West Indies cricket again and that is something we take away. We really appreciate the support we have got,” he added.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s win secured their place in the semifinals alongside England from Super Eight Group 2.
