Sanjay Bangar defended Prasidh Krishna’s poor Test debut by drawing parallels to Jasprit Bumrah’s initial struggles, emphasizing that similar challenges occurred in Bumrah’s early Test career.

On Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa, India faced a challenging situation as the hosts took an 11-run lead, amassing 256 runs with five wickets down by the end of the day. Criticism surfaced regarding 27-year-old Prasidh Krishna’s performance, who conceded 61 runs in 15 overs, securing only one wicket.

However, former cricketer Sanjay Bangar defended Krishna, citing similarities with Jasprit Bumrah’s Test debut. Bangar highlighted Bumrah’s initial struggles, recalling a match in Cape Town where Bumrah faced a tough start, giving away 60-70 runs on Day 1. Nonetheless, Bumrah adapted afterward, adjusting his length, which eventually improved his performance. Bangar suggested that Krishna, like Bumrah, might need time to find his rhythm in Test cricket.

“I feel this can happen. This has happened to somebody like Jasprit Bumrah as well. I still remember the first test, which happened in Cape Town. On Day 1, he went for 60-70 runs. After that he resorted to his natural length, which is hitting the length hard,” Bangar told Star Sports.

Bangar also highlighted Krishna’s potential impact when maintaining consistency with his line and length. Despite a slow start, he noted the bowler’s improved comfort in the latter stages. Bangar emphasized that while the expected difference in performance might not have shown in Krishna’s initial spell, it became evident later on.

“That’s what you saw, the clear of point of difference that the team management was hoping from Prasidh might not come into great effect in the first spell itself. But in the second spell, we saw if he can stick to that length of hitting the deck hard and not go searching for swing, he can still be a handful. Early days for Prasidh, but he is not the only one who has had a sort of a below-average start to his Test career,” Bangar concluded.
