Sanjay Manjrekar praised Yashasvi Jaiswal’s maturity on Day 1, highlighting the young batter’s strategic brilliance in facing James Anderson.
In the second Test against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s resilience against James Anderson drew praise from former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar. Jaiswal, at 22, showcased maturity by scoring 179* at a swift strike rate of 70, strategically facing Anderson with patience, limiting himself to eight runs off 47 deliveries without hitting a boundary. This marked Jaiswal’s second Test century in only his sixth outing, both exceeding 150 runs.
Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo after Day 1, Manjrekar commended Jaiswal for recognizing Anderson’s threat and employing a waiting game, underlining his astute reading of the match situation.
“It wasn’t like Jimmy Anderson didn’t bowl much, he bowled a lot. I don’t think a single boundary was hit by Jaiswal against him. That is maturity. He realized this is a bowler who’s not going to give him hittable balls,” said Manjrekar.
“He is an attacking player, very much a modern-day product and an IPL star as well. But a lot of the shots today were not him trying to unsettle the bowler or trying to play Bazball. It was him punishing the loose balls and that was the most impressive thing about Jaiswal. This was not so much counter-attacking but more Jaiswal batting normally and then progressively starting to dominate. And that was an excellent sign,” he added.
Jaiswal’s impressive 179* off 257 deliveries anchored India to 336/6 on Day 1 against England. Although he had previously scored a remarkable 171 on his Test debut, he missed out on centuries in subsequent innings.
Manjrekar also emphasized the significance of Jaiswal converting his century into a double ton for the team, especially as other batsmen failed to capitalize on decent starts. Despite his heroics, India needs substantial contributions, as no dismissed batsman managed to surpass the 40-run mark.
India faces a critical situation, needing a victory in the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam to level the series after a surprising 28-run loss in the opening match at Hyderabad.
