Sanjay Manjrekar T20 World Cup
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar criticized Pakistan’s poor performance after their loss to the USA in the T20 World Cup 2024 saying Pakistan hit rock bottom and looked like club-level cricketers.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar strongly criticized Pakistan after their shocking loss to the USA in the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. He compared the USA’s victory to climbing Mount Everest, while stating that Pakistan hit rock bottom.

In their first match of the tournament, Pakistan delivered an underwhelming performance at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas, losing in a Super Over by 5 runs. They posted a modest 159/7 in their 20 overs and then, despite having an experienced bowling attack, managed to take only three USA wickets.

Manjrekar expressed his disappointment on Star Sports, saying that the Pakistan players looked like club-level cricketers. He highlighted the poor execution in crucial moments, including Mohammad Amir’s Super Over and the numerous misfields under pressure.

“So early to reach such a peak as far as international cricket is concerned, winning this game. You have got one team like USA reaching Mt. Everest while Pakistan have really hit rock bottom. I have not seen a worse performance from Pakistan. This is not just about the defeat. The review, the Super Over from Mohammad Amir, the misfields when the pressure was on. It hurts me to see this because when I played against Pakistan they were world champions, they have hit rock bottom now,” Manjrekar said.

Manjrekar also criticized Pakistan captain Babar Azam for his defensive approach, which he believes led to Pakistan’s problems in their loss to the USA in the T20 World Cup 2024. He criticized the top-order batters for being overly cautious and aiming for a modest score, which he attributed to Babar’s conservative strategy.

“They have seen a few dips over the years. Pakistan being upset is actually a story in itself. India does not feature even once in the list of upsets in the T20 World Cup 2024. The quality of cricket that Pakistan have played today, they looked like club-level players,” Manjrekar said.

“Their batters at the top of the order gave far too much respect, they thought that 150 was a good enough score and that is why Babar Azam played the way he played. And that is where I really lost respect for Pakistan. Mohammad Amir has been brought for the experience and he started off with a wide ball in the Super Over. It was terrible,” he concluded.

After this unexpected defeat, Pakistan faces a challenging situation as they prepare to play against India on June 9th at the Nassau County Stadium in New York.
