Sanju Samson’s childhood coach stated that the wicketkeeper-batter is confident and adaptable enough to bat lower in India’s Asia Cup 2025 lineup.
Sanju Samson’s long-time coach Raiphi Gomez believes the wicketkeeper-batter has the technical ability and mindset to adapt to any batting position during the Asia Cup 2025. Samson is part of India’s 15-member squad but is not expected to open, with Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma likely to form the partnership. Gomez stressed that Samson’s versatility allows him to slot lower in the order if required.
He dismissed discussions around Samson being under pressure, calling it an external narrative, and pointed to the cricketer’s strong performances in the ongoing Kerala Cricket League (KCL). Representing Kochi Blue Tigers, Samson scored 6 off 3 in his first appearance, followed by 89 off 46 and 121 off 51 in the next two matches.
“Being a professional and internationally-established player, Sanju is flexible enough to make the adjustments if he has to bat down the order. His flexibility is what guides him, and he is very confident about his abilities,” Gomez was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
“Has Sanju said anything about being under pressure? No. So, it’s all outside noise, and we are not really concerned about what is being said outside. Our focus is on making sure Sanju keeps getting better with the bat. He is only concerned about the job he needs to do for India. What happened in the England T20Is is part and parcel of the game, which every cricketer goes through. Then, after the injury during the IPL, he spent necessary time at the (BCCI) Centre of Excellence to regain fitness, and now, he appears well placed rhythm-wise, playing in these KCL matches,” he added.
