Sanju Samson expressed his delight at being part of the T20 World Cup squad but his spot might be in jeopardy after a low score in the warm-up match.
Sanju Samson, fresh off a successful IPL 2024 season with the Rajasthan Royals, is embracing his dream come true of being part of India’s T20 World Cup squad.
The wicketkeeper-batter, who amassed 531 runs in 16 matches for the Royals, earned his national team call-up after a strong showing in the IPL. He faced competition for the keeper-batter role from KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik, but his key performances secured him a spot.
Describing his experience so far, the Kerala-born cricketer called it a dream come true. He’s fully focused on preparing for the mega-tournament, diligently attending gym sessions and net practice.
“Right from the moment I landed here (in the USA), IPL has been completely off (from my mind). I am in a completely different stage, and I am telling myself ‘you are somewhere where lots and lots of people dream about,” Samson told the BCCI.

Motivation, according to Samson, comes naturally when surrounded by legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. “When you get into the atmosphere and when you meet Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, then you get inspired, then you get motivated. There is no looking back actually, there is only looking front – how can Sanju Samson help the Indian team win games?” added the keeper.
However, Samson’s performance in the warm-up match against Bangladesh offered a contrasting picture. Opening alongside Rohit Sharma, he only managed one run. With Virat Kohli expected to return for the opening match against Ireland on June 5th, Samson might find himself on the bench, especially considering Rishabh Pant’s impressive form behind the wicket in the warm-up game.
