AB de Villiers expressed optimism about Sanju Samson’s performance in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, anticipating success on South African wickets due to his adaptability.
Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has expressed confidence in Sanju Samson’s return for India’s ODI series against South Africa, marking a notable comeback after his absence from the 2023 World Cup squad. Despite irregular appearances since his debut against Sri Lanka in 2021, Samson’s impressive ODI record boasts 390 runs at an average of 55.71 and a strike rate of 104 in 13 matches.
When speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers highlighted Samson’s adaptability to South African conditions. He also acknowledged Samson’s dual skill as a batsman and wicketkeeper, affirming his versatility and potential contribution to the team’s dynamics.
“It’s great to see him in the team. He will enjoy the South African wickets. He stands tall when he bats. There’s a bit of bounce and movement and all the batters will be tested. But someone like Sanju, I think, will do well. And he also gives you an option with the gloves,” de Villiers said.
India’s ODIs against South Africa kick off on December 17 in Johannesburg, followed by matches on December 19 in Gqeberha and December 21 in Paarl. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli won’t join the white-ball series at their request.
Suryakumar Yadav leads in the T20Is from December 10, followed by three ODIs and two Tests. KL Rahul heads the ODI squad. Mohammed Shami’s fitness is uncertain as he is undergoing medical treatment. Test matches are set for Centurion starting December 26 and Cape Town beginning January 3.
