Sanju Samson led Rajasthan Royals to victory in the IPL Eliminator but later revealed illness issues within the team.
The Rajasthan Royals punched their ticket to Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2024 playoffs with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Eliminator at Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
However, their captain, Sanju Samson, revealed after the match that illness has been running rampant in the Rajasthan Royals dressing room. “A few of us are not 100%. I’m not a 100% actually. There is a bug in the dressing room, lots of coughs and a lot of people are a bit unwell. But we have the momentum now, so the dressing room is confident,” admitted Sanju.
Despite these health concerns, the Royals displayed grit and determination to overcome their recent slump of four losses. Their bowlers, led by Trent Boult (1/16) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/19), restricted RCB to a total of 172/8.
The Royals’ chase got off to a promising start but stuttered in the middle overs. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (45) and Sanju Samson (17) fell in quick succession, raising concerns. However, Riyan Parag (36) and Shimron Hetmyer (26) steadied the innings with a 45-run partnership. Rovman Powell then sealed the victory with an unbeaten 16, including a match-winning six in the final over.

“We know in cricket, as in life, there are good days and bad days. The important thing is to bounce back. I’m happy with the way we batted, bowled, and fielded. All the credit goes to the players,” said Samson at the post-match presentation.
Samson also praised the team’s support staff, including head coach Kumar Sangakkara, for their tactical planning. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the young batting unit but applauded their performance.
Despite the illness concerns, the Royals are riding a wave of momentum heading into Qualifier 2 where they will face the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
