Shahid Afridi, a Pakistani cricket legend, was named an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Shahid Afridi, the iconic Pakistani all-rounder, has been named the latest ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament kicks off on June 2nd in the United States and West Indies.
Afridi, a veteran of six T20 World Cups, led Pakistan to victory in the 2009 season, even claiming the Player of the Match award in the thrilling final at Lord’s. He will participate in various promotional activities for the World Cup and share expert insights throughout the event through guest columns.
“The World Cup is a tournament incredibly close to my heart. From being the Player of the Tournament in the first edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of my greatest cricketing moments have come on this global stage,” said Afridi.
“World Cups have only gotten better over the years, and I’m excited to be a part of this edition, which will see more teams, more matches, and surely more drama than ever before. I’m particularly looking forward to the India-Pakistan clash on June 9th. This historic rivalry deserves a big stage, and New York will be the perfect setting for this unmissable match between two cricketing giants,” added Afridi.
Welcoming Afridi, Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager of Marketing and Communications, said, “Shahid’s experience is unmatched, having played in six T20 World Cups, captained two, and delivered a match-winning performance in the 2009 final. He’s a true fan favourite globally.”
