Shahid Afridi, former Pakistan captain and T20 World Cup ambassador, called the India-Pakistan clash the “Super Bowl” of cricket, being hopeful that America will pick up the sport soon.
Shahid Afridi, the T20 World Cup ambassador and former Pakistan captain, has likened the high-voltage India-Pakistan encounter on June 9th to the “Super Bowl” in the USA, highlighting the immense importance of the match.
Afridi, who himself enjoyed a fierce but respectful rivalry with India during his playing days, believes handling pressure will be the key factor in this marquee clash. “There’s so much talent in both teams, they just need to put it together on the day,” he said to ICC.
The upcoming match will be the first time these arch-rivals face off on American soil. Afridi expects the passionate cricket fans in the USA to embrace the sport, similar to their enthusiasm for other major sports.
“For those Americans discovering the tournament, they should know that Pakistan’s game against India is like our Super Bowl. This is also a huge tournament for American cricket. People are going to love the support in the States. There is a great expat community over there which absolutely loves cricket,” added Afridi.

While acknowledging the Men in Green’s inconsistent form leading up to the tournament, Afridi believes they can turn things around. “The conditions in the Caribbean will definitely suit them. There is so much talent in the side, particularly when you look at the bowling attack which should thrive over there. They have all the ingredients to put it all together in the West Indies and USA,” he said, highlighting the team’s talented bowling attack that will thrive in Caribbean conditions.
Afridi was also optimistic that the USA will develop a strong connection with cricket. “I really believe that cricket will hit the mainstream over there in the next few years, which is very exciting for up-and-coming cricketers,” he concluded.
