Shakib Al Hasan revealed he endured blurred vision due to stress-related issues throughout the entire World Cup 2023, possibly playing with one eye and experiencing discomfort while facing the ball.
During the ODI World Cup 2023, Bangladesh’s captain Shakib Al Hasan faced criticism for his poor performance compared to his stellar show in 2019. In the recent tournament in India, he struggled, amassing only 186 runs in seven matches at an average of 26.57, a stark contrast to his 606 runs and 11 wickets in the previous edition. Shakib’s difficulties prompted him to return home mid-tournament to seek guidance from his childhood mentor, Nazmul Abedin.
A month later, Shakib revealed playing the entire tournament with blurred vision due to stress-related issues. Speaking to Cricbuzz, he admitted experiencing discomfort while facing the ball and possibly playing with one eye, coping by assuming the ball’s direction amidst these challenges.
“It is not in one or two games in the World Cup, rather I was having it (the eye problem) throughout the World Cup. The thing is that when I went to the doctor there was water in my cornea or retina and they had given me drops and told me that I have to lower my stress. I am not sure whether that was the reason (for my eye problem). But when I again checked in America (after the World Cup) there was no stress and I told the doctor there is no World Cup so naturally there is no stress,” Shakib said.
Shakib further clarified that despite his team’s limited success in the tournament and the failure to secure a spot in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he didn’t attribute his stress to captaincy. He expressed that while captaincy was not the cause, having more time to prepare would have been beneficial.
