Shreyas Iyer on respect and role clarity

Shreyas Iyer reflected on his IPL 2024 KKR exit and said Punjab Kings gave him the respect and support he needed.
One of the finest white-ball batters at present, Shreyas Iyer has impressed fans over the past year with his consistent performances. Whether playing for India in ODIs or for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, he has established himself as a reliable middle-order batter. However, Iyer’s journey has seen several ups and downs. After leaving Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) following the IPL 2024 season, he was picked up by Punjab Kings in the mega auction.
In an interview with GQ, Iyer finally opened up about his departure from KKR. The 30-year-old hinted that the level of respect he now enjoys at Punjab Kings was missing during his stint with the Knight Riders.

“I offer a lot as a captain and player. If I get respect, anything can be accomplished,” said Iyer. “This is what happened at Punjab. They gave me all the support I needed, whether it was the coaches, management or players. I was coming off a high, having just helped India win the Champions Trophy. So all the stakeholders at Punjab Kings were eager to hear from me and have me contribute meaningfully. This allowed me to be decisive both on and off the field. I was in every meeting with the management and coaches, contributing strategically. This is something I love!”
Iyer also reflected on his time at KKR, where he held the captaincy role but felt he was not fully involved in the decision-making process as he is now at Punjab Kings. “I was part of the conversation, but wasn’t completely in the mix. I’ve had to work my way up to get to the position I am in now,” Iyer revealed.
