Shreyas Iyer has spoken out about being dropped from BCCI’s central contract list, attributing it to a lack of communication.

Despite being one of India’s top performers in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shreyas Iyer faced a setback when he was dropped from BCCI’s central contract list. Post-World Cup, he joined the squad for the South Africa series but failed to make an impact. The team management still showed faith in him, selecting him for the first two Tests against England. To prepare, Iyer played in the Ranji Trophy but underperformed in the initial games. Ignoring BCCI’s advice to continue in domestic cricket, he skipped the Ranji semi-final due to back spasms, a claim disputed by the National Cricket Academy. Consequently, BCCI dropped him from the contract list.

Iyer has now stated on his YouTube channel that miscommunication led to unfavorable decisions. Determined to prove himself, he led Mumbai to a Ranji Trophy win and captained Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL victory. Although currently out of the Indian team, Iyer remains optimistic about returning with consistent performances.

“I had a terrific World Cup and I wanted to take a break after that and wanted to work on my body and build some strength around certain area. Due to lack of communication, there were some decisions, that didn’t go in my favor,” Iyer said.

“But I realized that the bat is going to be in my hand and it’s on me to perform and win trophies. I decided that once I win Ranji Trophy and IPL that would be an apt answer for whatever happened in the past and thankfully everything fell to right place. I am grateful, how it happened. Also, we have a lot more trophies to win in the future,” he added.

Alongside Shreyas Iyer, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was also left out of BCCI’s contract list. Kishan had a disappointing season, making himself unavailable for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy and underperforming with Mumbai Indians in the IPL. It remains uncertain if Iyer will be recalled to the contract list.
