The BCCI is reportedly planning to make Shreyas Iyer India’s new ODI captain, while Shubman Gill is being rested from the role due to workload.
According to reports from Hindustan Times, the BCCI is exploring new leadership options for India’s ODI team. While Shubman Gill has been elevated as vice-captain in T20Is, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is emerging as a strong candidate for the ODI role. The 30-year-old is being seen as a long-term choice, possibly until the 2027 World Cup.
Iyer has impressive stats, with 2,845 runs in 70 ODIs at an average of 48.22, including five centuries. His form in the recent Champions Trophy further boosted his case, where he scored 243 runs in five innings with knocks of 15, 56, 79, 45 and 48.
However, the final call depends on Rohit Sharma, who turned 38 this year. With him and Virat Kohli already retired from two formats, the October ODI series against Australia could mark the transition point.

Earlier, reports had emerged of Shubman Gill being considered for the role. The BCCI prefers to manage his workload, as he already leads the Test side and serves as vice-captain in T20Is. Officials believe handling all three formats is unrealistic with packed calendar.
Notably, Gill will lead India in the West Indies Tests this October, just after the Asia Cup. Soon after, the team plays five T20Is in Australia, followed by a home series against South Africa featuring two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.
