In a recent development, a TOI source revealed that Shreyas Iyer might miss the first few matches of the IPL because of a back injury.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer’s participation in the upcoming IPL season is under a cloud of uncertainty due to a recurring back injury. According to a recent Times of India report, the cause for concern stemmed from an aggravation of the same back injury that required surgery for Iyer last year. This could lead him to miss the initial matches of the IPL season for KKR.
“It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury which has got aggravated. It’s unlikely that he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL. During the recently-held Test series against England at home, he told the Indian team management about this injury troubling him again,” the source said, as quoted by TOI.
Iyer first complained of back pain during the second Test between India and England in Visakhapatnam (Vizag). This issue had sidelined him from the remaining matches of the series, although no official explanation was provided at the time. He had also opted out of the Ranji Trophy quarter-final between Mumbai and Baroda.
Despite his earlier absence, Iyer did return for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against Tamil Nadu. He even went on to score 95 off 111 deliveries in the second inning of the final against Vidarbha on Day 3. However, his performance was hampered by back spasms, requiring treatment from the team physiotherapist.
Previously, Iyer had missed the entire 2023 IPL season due to back surgery. Following a lengthy recovery period, he made a successful return to competitive cricket at the 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. He also played crucial innings in India’s undefeated run to the ODI World Cup final in October and November.
The Kolkata Knight Riders will now be anxiously monitoring Iyer’s progress as they prepare for the upcoming IPL season. KKR will be kicking off their IPL 2024 campaign by facing Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23rd.
