India confirmed Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma as their opening pair for the Asia Cup 2025 in UAE.
The India National Cricket Team has finalized its opening combination for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which begins on September 9 in the UAE. India will open their campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by a high-voltage clash against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai.
With preparations in full swing, a top team official revealed India’s opening pair amid the buzz surrounding Shubman Gill’s return to the T20I side after more than a year.
It is now confirmed from various sources that Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma will open for India in the tournament. The management has decided on the duo, with changes possible only in case of injuries. This decision has cast doubt over Sanju Samson’s role in the side.
The Asia Cup 2025 will feature eight teams—India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. They are divided into two groups, with the top two from each advancing to the Super Four. The final will be played between the two best sides. India enter the tournament as defending champions, having lifted the trophy in 2023 under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy when it was played in the ODI format.

This time, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Men in Blue as they chase a record ninth Asia Cup crown. The competition will be played in the T20 format to prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
India’s recent T20I form has been dominant, with 35 wins in their last 40 matches. Big names such as Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shubman Gill are expected to play crucial roles in their campaign.
