Shubman Gill to skip red-ball tournament

India Test captain Shubman Gill was reportedly unwell and rested at his Chandigarh residence, days after being named in India’s 15-man squad for the Asia Cup 2025.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, Gill was recently examined by physios, with the BCCI being informed about his health a day earlier. The 25-year-old, who returned to India’s T20I setup as vice-captain, is expected to regain fitness in time for the continental event.
However, his illness means Gill will miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which marks the start of India’s domestic season. He was earlier named as captain of the North Zone side. While Gill was anyway expected to skip the tournament due to his Asia Cup commitments, his unavailability confirms that he will not feature in the competition.
The Duleep Trophy 2025 begins on August 28 and runs till September 15. The Asia Cup, meanwhile, starts on September 9 with Afghanistan facing Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. The scheduling meant Gill could have played the opening round of the Duleep Trophy, but he will now be unavailable for the entire event.
The North Zone selection committee had already anticipated this situation and named Shubham Rohilla as Gill’s replacement. With Ankit Kumar originally chosen as vice-captain, he will now lead the side in Gill’s absence.

Besides Gill, North Zone’s squad also features Asia Cup-bound pacers Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. Both may take part in the opening round before departing for the UAE to join the Indian squad. Meanwhile, the BCCI has reportedly expressed its displeasure at top India stars missing from the Duleep Trophy squads. According to The Indian Express, BCCI general manager Kuruvilla wrote to state associations regarding the matter.
“To uphold its prestige and ensure the highest quality of competition, it’s imperative that all currently available India players are selected for their respective zonal teams. Requesting the Zonal Convenors to ensure that all the current India players who are available to play Duleep trophy should be picked,” the letter stated.
The board is said to be unhappy over the non-selection of several leading India cricketers including KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna and Sai Sudharsan.
