Sanjay Manjrekar urged Shubman Gill to enhance his Test performances, emphasizing the necessity for consistent runs in Test cricket, considering the competition he faces.
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar emphasized the need for Shubman Gill to elevate his Test performances following a string of low scores, recognizing the competitive environment for spots. Gill’s shift to No.3 since the West Indies tour has been challenging, marked by scores of 6, 10, 29*, and 2. Debutant Shane Burger dismissed Gill in the first Test, prompting discussions about Gill’s consistency across formats.
When speaking on Star Sports, Manjrekar expressed confidence in Gill’s place in ODI cricket but highlighted the need for improvement in other formats, stressing the importance of consistent runs in Test cricket.
“Shubman Gill has to keep getting runs. If you look at his T20 performances, you know he is getting some serious competition there. Test cricket, I think, they will back him more, but the numbers have to keep coming. At the moment, Gill looks entrenched and established in the 50-over format. The other two formats, there is work to be done, but class-wise, he is a real deal,” Manjrekar said.
“He is the real deal. There is class there. Somebody who gets a 90 in his very first Test match in foreign condition against a good attack, has to have class. Now, finally, it has come to be about delivery, right? It’s about runs now. And his average at the moment is in the low 30s. He has been around for a while. The thing in India is that he has got batting competition coming through,” he added.
Gill sparkled in his debut series against Australia and bagged his first Test centuries against Bangladesh and Australia. However, despite flashes of brilliance, his Test average stands at a modest 32.20.
