Shubman Gill emerges as frontrunner

Shubman Gill was lined up as India’s next T20I captain with the Asia Cup vice-captaincy signalling a long-term plan.
The process to appoint India’s next T20I captain is underway, and batting star Shubman Gill has emerged as the frontrunner. The selection committee’s recent decision to name him vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE has made his position stronger. The team management is preparing Gill, already India’s Test captain, as a long-term replacement for Suryakumar Yadav, who turns 35 next month.
Gill last featured in a T20I during the Sri Lanka tour in July 2024. He also led India in a bilateral series against Zimbabwe after the World Cup in the Americas, a tournament he was not part of. For the past year, he has largely focused on the longer formats of the game for India.
With the next T20 World Cup just six months away, preparations have already started with the Asia Cup next month. According to Dainik Jagran, once Suryakumar steps down from T20I captaincy, Gill will be appointed as his successor.

Earlier this year, Gill took charge of the Test team after Rohit Sharma’s retirement. In his debut series as captain, he guided India to a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy while scoring more than 700 runs, including a record double-century at Edgbaston.
However, the board is cautious about Gill’s workload. He will not be made ODI captain, with middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer being lined up to replace Rohit Sharma in the one-day format.
