Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj Unlikely
Shubman Gill and Siraj might face the axe while the Indian think tank choose the Asia Cup squad on August 19. One of the main reasons of their axing is being speculated as the workload concerns and lack of suitable spot.
Indian selectors convene in Mumbai on Tuesday (August 19) to finalize the squad for the September Asia Cup T20 tournament. Despite standout performances in England, star batter Shubman Gill and leading pacer Mohammed Siraj face uncertain selection futures, as per a report from Cricbuzz.
Gill’s prolific Test runs (750+) and IPL form (650 runs) may not translate to a T20I spot, as selectors seem committed to openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Gill battles Yashasvi Jaiswal for the potential third opener role, with Jaiswal reportedly favoured.

The middle-order likely features Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rinku Singh. Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar compete for the remaining batting slot, while IPL finalist skipper Shreyas Iyer faces an uphill battle. Jitesh Sharma is expected as the reserve wicketkeeper.
Siraj, despite being “the highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar series” and “currently the toast of the nation,” could miss out. Jasprit Bumrah returns as the undisputed pace spearhead. Spots are anticipated for Arshdeep Singh and likely one of Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana. Hardik Pandya provides crucial pace depth. Veteran Mohammed Shami, part of India’s last T20I, is unlikely to feature.
The spin attack will be anchored by Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and vice-captain Axar Patel. Washington Sundar, part of the February T20I squad, has a strong chance for inclusion.
