Srikkanth Slams Shubman Gill’s Continued Backing
Former India captain Kris Srikkanth criticized Shubman Gill’s consistent selection despite his poor form, citing the lack of opportunities for other players like Suryakumar Yadav.
Shubman Gill, one of India’s promising young batters, has come under intense criticism following a series of poor performances. Former India captain and 1983 World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth has openly expressed his frustration with the selectors, questioning their decision to continuously back Gill despite his inconsistent form.
In a discussion on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth did not hold back. “I’ve always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer,” Srikkanth said, criticizing Gill’s continued inclusion in the national squad.
Srikkanth also raised concerns about the selection process, pointing out that other talented players, such as Suryakumar Yadav, have not been provided with similar opportunities in Test cricket. “When Gill is getting this much of a long rope, some people might wonder whether even players like Suryakumar Yadav could have been given a longer rope in Tests,” Srikkanth remarked.

Kris further emphasized Suryakumar Yadav’s potential, saying, “Suryakumar didn’t have a very good start in Tests but he has the technique and he has the ability. But the selectors and the management have now boxed him into a white-ball specialist. So that means you have to look at fresh talent.”
Gill’s recent form, particularly in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia, has been disappointing. Across five innings, he managed only 93 runs, with scores of 13, 20, 1, 28, and 31. This contributed to India’s 3-1 loss in the series, with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also failing to make a significant impact.
