Shubman Gill’s vice-captaincy move sparks future leadership debate
Maninder Singh predicted Shubman Gill as India’s next all-format captain while expressing disappointment over Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the Asia Cup 2025 squad.
Former India spinner Maninder Singh predicted that world No. 1 ODI batter Shubman Gill would be the next all-format captain of the Indian men’s cricket team. He claimed that the BCCI selectors had already made the decision, which is why Gill was named as vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025.
Gill, who last featured in a T20I for India on July 30, 2024, earned a recall as vice-captain when India announced their 15-member Asia Cup squad on August 19. “See, I feel that the selectors have basically decided that he is going to be our future captain. And if he is going to be our future captain, then you better make him the vice-captain because Surya Kumar Yadav may have just another two years of T20 cricket, and then you have Gill ready under him,” Maninder was quoted as saying by PTI Videos.
Gill’s return to the squad meant there was no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Shreyas Iyer was also ignored despite strong recent form. Maninder admitted his disappointment over the two omissions. “See, I was a little disappointed not to see these two names. Jaiswal, I think, is ready for any format, and he should be there in any team. As far as Iyer is concerned, I mean, you know, I really don’t know why he keeps getting left out of the Indian side because he’s such a fantastic player and such a positive player and contributes to the team,” he said.

Iyer, who last played a T20I for India against Australia in Bengaluru on December 3, 2023, had staked a claim for selection through his IPL 2025 campaign. The right-hander scored 604 runs in 17 matches for Punjab Kings but still failed to find a place in the Asia Cup squad.
Maninder urged the selectors not to repeat past mistakes with Iyer.
“But then this has been happening for years. And when another couple of years go by, you don’t give him a chance, you’ll find somebody else, and you’ll forget about all these things. But that shouldn’t happen,” he added.
