Rahul Dravid extended support to Shubman Gill, emphasizing the youngster’s hard work and assuring that success often requires time.
Ahead of the five-match Test series against England, Team India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, has expressed support for Shubman Gill, who has faced criticism for his recent red-ball cricket performance. Despite being the leading run-scorer in ODIs last year, Gill’s form in Test cricket has dipped, worsened by a change in batting position from opener to number 3 during the West Indies series. Struggling to secure runs in the new position, Gill’s spot in the Test team is now under scrutiny.
Dravid, however, defended the 24-year-old, highlighting the natural progression in a cricketer’s journey. He emphasized that success may take time, and acknowledged Gill’s earlier accomplishments, especially in Australia where he made an impact early in his Test career.
“Gill is a fine player. Starting out as a journey as a cricketer sometimes we forget that it takes a little bit of time at times. Some guys have success instantly, actually he is one of those guys who has done really well in some of his early days, especially in Australia,” Dravid told the reporters.
“To be fair to him a lot of young guys coming through are playing on some challenging wickets, whether it’s been in India or England or West Indies. It has been a pretty challenging wickets for the last two or three years,” he added.
Dravid also expressed confidence in Gill’s efforts to reclaim form in red-ball cricket, noting the youngster’s dedication and hard work. Highlighting Gill’s recent centuries in Bangladesh and Ahmedabad against Australia, the coach affirmed that Gill is on the right track and progressing positively in his cricketing journey.
