Former captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced support for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to be included in India’s T20 World Cup squad, as both players expressed their availability for the upcoming tournament.
Former captain Sourav Ganguly has thrown his weight behind Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, advocating for their inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad slated for June. As reports suggest Sharma and Kohli’s availability for the shortest format, the selectors face an important decision ahead of BCCI’s anticipated announcement of India’s squad for Afghanistan T20Is. Their last T20 appearance dates back to India’s semifinal loss to England in November.
Ganguly emphasized Rohit’s captaincy suitability and vouched for Kohli’s remarkable skills, assuring that their return to the T20 arena, despite a prolonged absence, won’t hinder their performance.
“Of course Rohit should captain the team in the T20I World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player, nothing will happen (even if they are coming back to T20 fold after a long gap),” Ganguly said to the reporters.
Earlier, PTI reported that selector Ajit Agarkar visited South Africa during the second Test to discuss with Kohli and Rohit, confirming their availability.
During Rohit Sharma’s absence in 2023, Hardik Pandya stepped up as vice-captain and led India in 11 matches until an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup in October 2023. Suryakumar Yadav took over in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa following Pandya’s injury.
Cricket icons Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan also have previously endorsed Rohit and Kohli’s participation in this year’s T20 World Cup. India’s World Cup journey begins on June 5 against Ireland and includes a high-stakes encounter against Pakistan on June 9 in New York.
