Sourav Ganguly emphasized that once Rohit Sharma resumes playing across all cricket formats, he should take over as India’s captain due to his exceptional performance in the World Cup.
Sourav Ganguly endorsed Rohit Sharma to lead India in the upcoming T20 World Cup following Rohit’s impressive stint as captain in the recent ODI World Cup. Ganguly praised Rohit’s leadership, stating that Rohit holds the necessary experience to guide the team in the T20 World Cup.
Rohit, who hasn’t featured in T20Is since last year’s World Cup, is on a break from the ongoing T20I series against Australia and the upcoming South Africa matches from December 10.
“Once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India, because he has done so well in the World Cup. You saw in the World Cup how well they played. They are absolutely integral and an important part of Indian cricket.” Ganguly said when speaking to the reporters.
The former BCCI president also advocated for Rohit and Virat Kohli’s rest, emphasizing the need for their refreshed state for the busy cricket calendar. The BCCI hasn’t clarified if Rohit and Virat are part of India’s T20 World Cup plans, with Suryakumar Yadav currently leading in the ongoing Australia T20 series.
Ganguly also highlighted the unique pressures of World Cups and expressed confidence in their future performances. Both players are expected back for the South Africa Test series after a well-deserved break post the World Cup.
He’s (Rohit) a leader. I expect and I presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup in 2024. Very rightfully, they have taken a break because there is so much cricket all the time. I cannot imagine that you played a World Cup final on the 19th and in three days time you’re playing a T20I series against the same team. They will come back fresh for Tests — there are five Tests against England — there’s IPL, and then the T20 World Cup, so it’s non-stop cricket. Hopefully, they’ll come back fresh and keep performing,” he added.
