Delhi Capitals have confirmed that Ricky Ponting is no longer their head coach, and Sourav Ganguly has hinted he might take over the role, highlighting his plans to focus on the upcoming mega auction.
Delhi Capitals have officially parted ways with Ricky Ponting, who served as their head coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2018 without winning a title. With Ponting’s departure coinciding with the upcoming mega auction, attention turns to Sourav Ganguly, the franchise’s Director of Cricket, who has emerged as a leading candidate for the coaching role.

In a recent interview with Bengali newspaper Aajkal, Ganguly expressed his ambition to guide Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL victory, stressing the need for a strategic overhaul after what he deemed as stagnation under Ponting’s seven-year tenure. Hinting strongly at his interest in the head coach position, Ganguly outlined plans to assess and possibly reshape the team.
“I have to plan for next year’s IPL. I want to win the IPL for Delhi Capitals once. The mega auction is next year, and hence I have started planning from now on. Geoffrey Boycott was right, as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward in the past 7 years. I have to speak with the franchise and ask them to look at Indian coaches,” Aajkal quoted him as saying.
“I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform. Will need to recruit some new players,” Ganguly added.
Delhi Capitals’ assistant coach Praveen Amre is confirmed to continue in his role as the franchise’s co-owners, JSW and GMR group, plan a meeting by the end of this month or early next month to strategize for the future. The key issue is player retention, limited to four spots with one overseas slot available.
Looking ahead to the IPL 2025 mega auction, speculation swirls around potential stars from all franchises entering the auction pool.
