Sourav Ganguly praised the “fair” T20 World Cup squad selection and assured omitted player Rinku Singh of future opportunities.
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly expressed his satisfaction with the selected squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. He commended the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, for picking a “fair” team.
While acknowledging the disappointment of batter Rinku Singh, who was not included in the final squad but named as a reserve, Ganguly assured him of a bright future.
“I think this is one of the fairest teams I have seen. I am not saying other teams are not fair. I think the selectors and Rohit have done a fantastic job picking this side. I think Rinku missed out because they wanted to go with another spinner. But Rinku is on standby, so fingers crossed. It is just the beginning of Rinku’s career. He will play a lot for India. I think he should not be disheartened by this. But I think this is a very strong team, a solid team,” opined Ganguly, explaining the selection committee’s decision to prioritise an additional spinner due to the anticipated spin-friendly conditions in the West Indies, where the tournament will be held.
Though Ganguly termed the selections fair, many other cricket experts, like Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Irfan Pathan, heavily criticised Rinku’s omission.

The selection process included some surprises, with the re-inclusion of Yuzvendra Chahal, who impressed during the ongoing IPL season despite not being part of the recent T20 squads. Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant also earned their spots with strong performances.
Meanwhile, team captain Rohit Sharma revealed that the playing XI has not been finalised yet, as they await a clearer picture of the conditions in the USA, where the initial matches will be played. Notably, the skipper did leave the option open for including an extra spinner if needed. India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign by facing Ireland on June 5th.
