When Sachin Tendulkar played a food prank On Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly recalled how Sachin Tendulkar once pranked him into eating crocodile meat during a tour in Nairobi.
Sachin Tendulkar is celebrated for his legendary batting, but off the field, he had a playful side that often surfaced during team tours. In a recent appearance on celebrity chef Sanjyot Keer’s YouTube channel Your Food Lab, former India captain Sourav Ganguly shared a light-hearted story from their playing days, revealing how the Master Blaster once pranked him into eating crocodile meat in Kenya.
Ganguly and Tendulkar share one of the most iconic partnerships in ODI history, scoring 6,609 runs from 136 innings as an opening pair at an average of 49.32. Their bond extended beyond the pitch, with the duo often rooming together during international tours.
While speaking on the cooking show, Ganguly praised Tendulkar’s values, crediting his upbringing. “He came from a very good family. His father was a teacher, so his life values are too good. His mischief was food,” Ganguly said.
Recalling the prank, Ganguly narrated an incident that took place during a tour to Nairobi. Tendulkar, curious to try crocodile meat, came up with a mischievous plan to include his teammate in the experience. “When we went to Nairobi in Kenya, there was a big restaurant, I don’t remember the name, I’ll tell you soon. All meats were available there. He wanted to have crocodile meat, and he knew that I wasn’t going to eat it,” Ganguly recalled.

Tendulkar asked the chef to prepare crocodile meat and serve it as chicken. “He asked the chef to make good crocodile meat and while placing it on the table, say that it’s chicken. So he put it on the table and we ate it. We didn’t even realise. In the end, Tendulkar asked how the food was. I told him ‘It’s very good, chicken here is very good’. He told me it was a crocodile,” Ganguly added.
When asked how he reacted, Ganguly shared, “I didn’t say anything. I would have been dropped from the team had I said anything. I told him the food was good. But he is a great human being.”
Ganguly ended the anecdote on a warm note, saying, “I wasn’t just his opening partner; I was his partner in mischief, hobbies, and everything else. He wasn’t able to do too much mischief as the camera would follow him wherever he would go.”
The story offered a rare glimpse into the lighter side of Indian cricket’s golden era, showcasing the camaraderie and playful spirit that existed within the team.
